Small experiments. Lasting understanding.

Build your lighting intuition.

Six field labs to help you predict the result before you touch the controls.

Flash power

Meter a fixed setup at 1/32, then predict and measure the reading at 1/16. Compare your prediction with the result.

Distance and falloff

Measure the face and backdrop before and after moving the light. Record brightness, coverage and shadow changes.

Grids and modifiers

Compare controlled before-and-after readings at the subject and background. Keep power, distance and aim fixed.

Multiple lights

Meter each light separately at one consistent point. Then measure them together and compare the sum.

Flash and ambient

Establish ambient exposure with flash off. Add flash, change background brightness and verify the subject.

Sony a9 III timing

Record exact gear and repeated camera frames across offsets. Save a stable, unclipped result for that configuration.
