Flash & Ambient Coach: Darker Sky, Balanced Portraits
Start with your own readings. Calculate the change, verify a frame, and save what works.
Flash & ambient coach
Start with an ambient reading. Choose background brightness, camera settings, and a metered key-light target.
Make the background darker without guessing at flash power
Start with an ambient meter reading, choose how bright the background should look, and solve camera exposure plus an isolated key-light meter target. Account separately for ambient reaching the subject; a background reading is not automatically the subject reading.
- Record the background ambient reading, its metering method, ISO and shutter. Set your background brightness goal and preferred camera aperture.
- Measure ambient at the subject, or explicitly confirm it is negligible. Choose subject brightness or apply a previously verified highlight calibration, then review the key-light meter target.
- Use an actual isolated-flash reference for a power suggestion. Check sync and pulse-capture limits, remeasure the final setup, and verify a photograph.
With unchanged aperture and ISO, moving from 1/250 to 1/1000 second darkens ambient by two stops. Flash stays constant only if the captured pulse energy is unchanged; that assumption must be tested at high shutter speeds.
Will this tell me an exact HSS power?
No. HSS response depends on the equipment and shutter. The coach distinguishes a complete-pulse calculation from a starting point that needs camera measurement.
Does ND affect only the background?
A lens ND filter attenuates both flash and ambient. The plan must account for both.
